Groups, teams and communities: design patterns and principles for technology-mediated collaborative learning

Kashmira Dave, CoCo, University of Sydney,

Peter Goodyear, CoCo, University of Sydney,

Yael Kali,Technion, Israel Institute of Technology

217

This is a full-day workshop focussed on design issues that arise when students are asked to work collaboratively: whether in small or very large groups. The adoption of new technologies and working methods, in tertiary education, creates opportunities and challenges – especially when learning activities can slide between physical, virtual and 'blended' spaces, and where collaboration can also involve a mixture of face-to-face and technology-mediated interactions. The workshop introduces a number of design ideas, taken from work on design principles, patterns and pattern languages, and provides an opportunity for workshop participants to use some of the associated methods to capture and share aspects of what works well in collaborative learning.

Sunday – full day

(9am-4pm)

Towards Moodle 2.0

Stuart Mealor

260-026

OGGB Lab 10

This Workshop will focus on the new features introduced in Moodle 2.0 for Teachers.

It is not a technical workshop.

The aim is to introduce teachers and course developers to the functionality in Moodle 2.0 that will directly impact on teachers, course design, and learners.

As well as practical content, this workshop will be structured to enable discussion and interaction around specific topics and functions of Moodle 2.0.

Sunday – morning

(9am-12noon)

Exploring Mobile Space: Pedagogical affordances of Wireless Mobile Devices.

Thomas Cochrane, James Clay, and Roger Bateman

215

Objectives of the workshop:

To explore the potential of wireless mobile devices to enhance tertiary education today, outlining both research-informed principles, as well as giving participants' practical hands on experience of how to use the capabilities of wireless mobile devices within a pedagogical framework.

How can e-Portfolios Support 21st Century Learning?

Lisa Gray.
JISC e-Learning Programme Manager
JISC Executive
University of Bristol

221

e-Portfolios are not a new concept. In various guises, digital presentations of skills and competences, online records of achievement, and action plans with opportunities for reflection have been in use in education for nearly a decade. So what is new about e-portfolios?

This workshop will explore what we mean by e-portfolios and how e-portfolios can support 21st century learning. Drawing on the work of UK-based JISC-funded projects and other significant e-portfolio developments in the UK, it will provide a snapshot of learning enhanced by e-portfolios in higher, further and continuing education.

Sunday – morning

(9am-12noon)

Publishing in AJET and in peer reviewed journals related to educational technology

Associate Professor Catherine McLoughlin, ACU National Canberra

205

At the end of this 3 hour workshop, participants should have a clear understanding of the most important strategies for successful publication in AJET and similar journals. By the end of the workshop will know how to:

-     plan for publishing by targeting appropriate journals in educational technology and related fields;

-     find out what editors and referees really want: what criteria are applied in assessing the worth of a paper;

-     transform a conference paper into a journal publication

-     edit and review your paper;

-     plan  a paper and match their writing style with that of the journal chosen

-     understand the review process in AJET, and how to increase their acceptance  rate

Collaborative Learning Technologies

John Hamer, Paul Denny and Helen Purchase
Department of Computer Science
University of Auckland

Case room 2

Contributing student pedagogy (CSP) encourages students to contribute to the learning of their peers and to value the contributions of their peers (Hamer et al., 2008). This workshop will explore the challenges and benefits of using CSPs, introducing two existing systems that support its use: in peer-assessment and in student-generated MCQs.

Sunday - afternoon

(1pm-4pm)

The Pedagogy and Practice of PebblePad: a workshop of conversation and exploration

Objectives of the workshop:

1.   Improve our understanding of how virtual worlds facilitate immersion and discover why it is so desirable in an educational context.

2.   To be able to identify and classify those issues that facilitate immersion and conversely, those factors that inhibit it and gain some understanding as to how these might be manipulated or mitigated.

3.   To design and critique an immersive educational activity or series of activities, to be held in a virtual world.

4.   To identify the resources needed to support immersive experiences in virtual worlds.

5.   To work towards formulating a strategy for approaching the design of immersive educational activities in virtual worlds.
