Awards
The ASCILITE awards are designed to reward leaders in the use of electronic
technologies in teaching and learning in tertiary education. All current
ASCILITE members may submit an example of work for consideration. Further
details about the award categories and conditions are available at ASCILITE Awards.
The Program Committee for ASCILITE 2001 has introduced a number of changes
to the program and publication format for this year's conference. While the
changes are relatively small, it is hoped they will greatly facilitate the
exchange of information and ideas concerning the research, development and
application of educational technologies. The major issues which need to be
considered by those intending to submit a paper for the conference are outlined
below.
- The ASCILITE 2001 program committee will call for full papers, short papers
and workshops
- Full and short papers will be fully refereed and will be published in
independent volumes of the ASCILITE 2001 conference proceedings
- Delegates will be restricted to publishing one full paper and one short
paper as the first author in the conference proceedings. There is no
restriction on the number of papers delegates can publish as secondary
authors
- There will be three presentation formats at the conference: traditional
paper presentations (25 minutes), interactive presentations (25 minutes) and
poster presentations (1 hour)
- The type of paper accepted for the conference proceedings (full or short)
is independent of its presentation format at the conference. Full papers will
be presented as either traditional paper presentations or interactive
presentations; short papers will be presented as either interactive or poster
presentations
The restriction of delegates to one publication as primary author (on full
and short papers) has been introduced in an attempt by the program committee to
encourage diversity and variety in the conference program.
With respect to presentation format, major theoretical, technical,
organisational, review, evaluation and research papers will be more suited to
traditional paper presentations. However, papers that are primarily
descriptions of the development and implementation of educational technology
will be encouraged to demonstrate their technology, and allow delegates to
experience the product or course in a hands on, interactive manner. In their
submissions, authors will be asked to nominate their presentation format
preference and referees will be asked to suggest the most suitable mode of
presentation. The program committee will ultimately make a decision regarding
the presentation format of accepted papers.

Two types of papers will be published from this year's ASCILITE
conference: full papers and short papers. Both full and short papers must
address at least one of the conference themes: reflection, convergence, collaboration, and innovation.
Purpose:
The aim of full papers is to provide comprehensive and up-to-date reviews of
an aspect of educational technology development and/or implementation. Full
papers should clearly articulate the problem, task or area of inquiry. They
should be academically rigorous and be appropriately referenced (APA style; 4th
Ed.). The aim of the paper should be clear and authors should draw out the
major implications or conclusions of their discussion.
Scope:
Areas that fall within the scope of full papers include:
- Major theoretical and/or conceptual reviews
- Major technical reviews and/or systems developments
- Organisational, management or policy initiatives in the area of educational
technology design, development and implementation
- Empirically based evaluation and research studies including, but not
restricted to, theoretically based case studies
- Large case studies of local experiences where educational technology has
been fully implemented for over one year
- Major educational technology product developments
- Major pedagogical or curriculum development initiatives
Full papers are not restricted to the areas outlined above and the program
committee will accept additional papers based on their academic merit and
relevance to the conference themes.

Purpose:
The aim of short papers is to provide a forum for the discussion of recent
innovations in the area of educational technology development and/or
implementation and a forum for the discussion of works in progress. As with
full papers, short papers should be academically rigorous and appropriately
referenced.
Scope:
Areas that fall within the scope of short papers include:
- Small evaluation studies, including case studies, of local experiences with
educational technology
- Exploratory projects in the area of educational technology development,
implementation or evaluation
- Recent educational technology product developments where the project is
considered a work-in-progress
Short papers are not restricted to the areas outlined above and the program
committee will accept additional papers based on their academic merit,
innovation and relevance to the conference themes.

Published papers can be presented in any one of three formats at the
conference: traditional paper presentations, interactive presentations and
poster presentations.
Traditional Paper Presentations:
Traditional paper presentations will be restricted to full paper
submissions. Paper presentations are allotted a 30 minute time period in the
conference program. This time is divided into 20 minutes speaking time, 5
minutes question time, and 5 minutes changeover time. Presenters may choose to
use their question time to complete their presentation but must not encroach on
the changeover time as this is needed to allow IT support staff to complete
technical changeovers between presentations and will allow conference delegates
to move between sessions.
Interactive Presentations:
Interactive presentations will be drawn from both full paper and short paper
submissions. Presentations will be allotted a 25 minute time period. Presenters
will be encouraged to present a brief (5 minute) overview of their paper and
then demonstrate material which forms the basis of their paper (eg educational
technology products, innovations, web pages, courses etc). A number of desktop
computers will be available to the audience so they can explore the content of
the presentation, guided by the presenter. The format of these presentations is
more informal than traditional paper presentations and should encourage rolling
discussion between the presenter(s) and delegates. The presentation format will
also enable the audience to experience a hands on approach to the topic of the
presentation.
Poster Presentations:
Poster presentations will be restricted to short paper submissions. These
are traditional poster presentations which do not require a computer. A number
of poster presentations will be conducted simultaneously over a one hour
period. Presenters will lead informal discussions with delegates at their
presentation. Presenters can bring their own laptop computers to supplement
their display but computers will not be provided by the conference
organisers.

Both full and short papers will be subjected to a double blind peer review.
Full and short papers that are accepted will be published in independent
volumes of the ASCILITE 2001 conference proceedings. This refereeing process
will conform to DETYA standards of E1.
Please note, this year abstracts will not be reviewed as
part of the refereeing process. Full and short papers are due by June 8 (see critical dates)

Purpose
As usual workshops will be run on the Sunday before the formal opening of
ASCILITE 2001. Workshops make an invaluable contribution to the ASCILITE
conference program as they provide a forum for detailed discussion and
consideration of issues in the area of educational technology. They provide an
excellent opportunity for staff development where experts in the field take
time to enhance the skills and broaden the perspectives of participants.
Length:
Workshop proposals should be no longer than three A4 pages (or 1500 words).
Body text should be 12 point (Times New Roman), singled-spaced and all margins
should be set at 3 cm.
Workshop proposals should include the following information:
- Proposed length of workshop (half-day or full-day)
- Intended audience and degree of expertise required by workshop
participants
- Clear statement of the objectives of the workshop
- A detailed description of the workshop format including activities workshop
participants will be expected to engage in
- A summary of the workshop presenter's qualifications
