ADVANCE is an interactive computer based teaching and learning aid for teachers and students of actuarial studies at an undergraduate level. It has been specifically designed to present basic actuarial principles at a level consistent with subject material and in a manner which enhances student understanding. Prior to the development of ADVANCE actuarial education world wide has been provided via distance education and by universities through the customary modes of lectures, tutorials, subject notes, exercises and assignments. Sophisticated computer models developed to handle commercial actuarial problems are totally inappropriate for teaching students with little or no prior knowledge of the problems being considered. ADVANCE is an MS Windows application that performs actuarial and demographic calculations. The package is composed of eight distinct modules corresponding to undergraduate actuarial and demographic topics. ADVANCE was developed largely during 1994 while subjects were proceeding and incorporated feedback from the lecturers and students of those subjects.
